"In the fall of 2005 we had planned to go to Key West for a week. The hurricane after Katrina changed our plans. Late the night before we were to leave the resort called us and said that we weren't coming there after all. We had to leave for our flight to Fort Lauderdale, previously arranged by Nick to get us the best price and a convenient location, the next afternoon! That morning I called Nick, explained the situation, and asked him if he had any ideas for places to go in south Florida, especially the West coast. He said he'd make some calls and get back to us. About an hour later he did, with a place in Naples in mind. He described the place, give us the website, and hung on while we looked at it. It looked good on the website (which can be deceiving) and, more importantly, Nick spoke well of the place so we said go ahead and book it. He did that and faxed us the confirmation in plenty of time for us to get on the road. We got down there and found that the place was wonderful. It was right on the beach, in a quiet area (which we like) but very close to town. Very well appointed, well maintained, and with great service. I'd go back there on purpose! I'd dealt with Nick before and had always been happy with the results but this was above and beyond the call of duty. Where else can you find service like that? You can't. When I'm traveling again, I'm calling Nick."

Check with your medical insurance company to find out if and how you're covered when traveling both within and outside the United States

Buy an inexpensive (disposable) camera for children who are old enough to use it. The trip is then photographed from the child's perspective.

Attach a brightly colored piece of fabric to the handle of your luggage. This will prevent anyone from mistaking it for their own.

Roll up your clothes in tight cylinders. It keeps your clothes wrinkle free and takes up less valuable space.

If your luggage is lost at the airport, file a formal claim immediately. Don't wait until you get home. Keep your claim form, baggage check and ticket until your luggage is found or reimbursed.

Get an International Driver's Permit from AAA if you plan to rent a car overseas. It's a good document to possess when driving in a country where you don't speak the language.
